ORTHOTICS
A device that can be discreetly inserted into the shoe to support, align, prevent and/or accommodate foot abnormalities and improve how the foot functions.
Used in conjunction with appropriate footwear, a foot orthotic can be effective in helping to treat a number of foot and lower limb problems including:
-Heel pain
-Arch pain
-Forefoot pain
-Shin splints
-Knee pain
Foot orthotics can also help address foot and lower limb pain and complications related to health conditions such as diabetes and arthritis.
ORTHOPEDIC FOOTWEAR
Canadian Certified Pedorthists separate shoes into two main categories:
Occasional shoes – shoes you only wear a few times, to a party or an event, so the evaluation process is not as crucial
Functional shoes – shoes you wear everyday, for work and play. Because these shoes provide your feet and legs with support for the majority of the day, the selection process is very important to maintaining your healthy, active lifestyle
When selecting functional shoes, it is important you carefully consider their fit and function to ensure they will provide you with maximum support. This is important for all ages, particularly:
- Children whose feet are developing
-Adults who spend hours on their feet and often suffer from foot and leg discomfort (they may be unaware it’s caused by improper footwear)
-Senior citizens – as studies have shown that improper footwear is one of the leading causes of falls.
COMFORTABLE FOOTWEAR
Our selected comfortable footwear is orthotic-friendly.
ORTHOPEDIC BRACING
The function of orthopedic braces include providing support and stability; preventing and/or correcting deformities; providing joint alignment; and improving function and/or gait. Some of the goals that we strive to achieve in selecting an orthopedic brace for a patient include fitting a lightweight device; a functional device; something that will help a patient conserve energy; and a comfortable device that improves quality of life.
COMPRESSION THERAPY
Compression therapy employs a simple and efficient mechanical principle: the application of an elastic garment around the leg for better venous return.
By compressing the limb with graduated compression - strongest at the ankle and decreasing going up the leg - the compression stocking helps the venous return, decreases venous pressure, prevents venous stasis and deterioration of venous walls, and efficiently relieves aching and heavy legs by aiding the body in moving blood up the leg against the pull of gravity.
This treatment is prescribed by a physician to treat phlebitis, thrombosis and aftercare following surgery, sclerotherapy and any other forms of varicose vein treatment, and also to relieve all conditions of chronic venous disease (heavy legs, varicose veins, oedemas, leg ulcers).
It can also be prescribed to prevent venous issues during pregnancy and long distance travel.
